Originally from California, he earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego (1983). His translations from Chinese include a rendering of the Tao Te Ching (The Gate of All Marvelous Things: A Guide to Reading the Tao Te Ching, Red Mansions Publishing, 1998, distributed by China Books, San Francisco). Unlike other versions, the central aim of this rendering of the I Ching has been to supply a literal English translation for each Chinese character. Also provided are the contemporary standard pronunciation for each character and a clear English translation.
